Middlemarch

About Middlemarch today

Middlemarch is a small township with a population of about 150 located a leisurely one hour drive northwest of central Dunedin. It is central to the rural district of Strath Taieri, which has an estimated population of 730. A primary school, post office, convenience store, licensed hotel, and a cafe cater for the community’s day to day needs.

Visitors will find a museum, rail trail operators, an art gallery and a range of accommodation options including B&Bs, and a camping ground with cabins and a motel. Multiple sports facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a gymnasium, tennis courts, golf course, lawn bowling club, and the A & P showground which hosts an annual agricultural show and is used for equestrian activities, rugby and other sports.

The Community Hall is used regularly for the activities of line dancers, the local rugby club and other community groups.

Grocott’s Organic Community Garden offers a friendly environment to participate in horticultural pursuits and learn about organic growing.
